OLIS (Ontario Laboratories Information System)

Access to OLIS data assists patient care!

Although the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) Viewer is just over one year old, feedback recently obtained from a survey (based on 54 survey responses) of those using OLIS data indicated that:

  • Access to OLIS has reduced the administrative time required to access external patient lab results;
  • Using OLIS data reduced the time waiting for lab results;
  • Access to OLIS has prevented the ordering of duplicate lab tests;
  • Access to OLIS has helped improve the quality of care provided to patients.

Quotes from those using the data include:

  • “None of us at the clinic know how we survived without OLIS, and none of us want it to be taken away.”
  • “I use OLIS every day, many, many times a day.”
  • “My patients know all about OLIS. OLIS is terrific for them.”
  • “This is the best thing that has happened to this hospital and clinical practice.”
  • “OLIS is a game-changer.”
  • “Before OLIS, I called labs at least 10 times a week to track lab results. Now, I haven’t called a lab in over a month.”

Other benefits identified to-date include:

  • Improved clinical decision making with the ability to trend external lab results for a patient;
  • A significant decrease in workload related to searching for external lab results;
  • More than one provider can review patient results simultaneously from different locations, e.g., RN and dietician;
  • The OLIS Viewer is easy to access and simple to use.

Use of the data has also benefited patients by:

  • Helping them feel less anxious about ‘misplaced results’;
  • Timeliness of results enables them to have effective visits with their care providers;
  • Fewer instances of ‘needle being stuck in their arm’, because results from family physicians are accessible through OLIS;
  • The tests ordered by the family physicians do not need to be reordered in the hospital.
